I am Nelson Rodriguez and I have been incarcerated for 14 years. I am turning 60 this July.

My medical conditions include diabetes, high blood pressure, arthritis, near-syncope (fainting spells), ankle joint disease (on both ankles), kidney disease, hypertension, and tremors (neurological disorders). Despite all this, I try my best every day to do what is right.

I have used my time while incarcerated to better myself. I achieved my High School Equivalency diploma and completed two vocational trade programs, small appliance repair and small engine repair.

I have been a model incarcerated person. In 14 years I have received no disciplinary infractions, or “tickets,” as we call them.

I do not smoke, drink, or use drugs. I have been a member of the Chapel of the Redeemer, the Protestant Church here at Sing Sing, for the past 14 years — my entire time incarcerated. I am also an active member of the Spanish and English choir.

Before I came to prison I worked for the New York City Housing Authority.

Legally, I have been represented by the Center for Appellate Litigation in New York City for the past 14 years. They submitted a writ of habeas corpus on May 8, 2019.

Thank you for thinking of all of us. All of us elders have, at times, believed that nobody was willing to fight for us. But I know that our Lord and Savior is a way maker.
